On Wednesday 23rd November 2016, 10 bright and budding Year 7 pupils travelled to Redden Court School to participate in an English Challenge against 3 other schools.
Ten of our potentially Most Able pupils were selected by their teachers to represent Bower Park Academy in a meeting of the minds, all with English as a key focus. Our students were nervous, as they weren’t really sure what to expect.
When we arrived, we were greeted warmly by Assistant Head, Mr. Henry. He sat our team at a table and then proceeded to explain the rules to everyone taking part. Unfortunately, the other two schools who were supposed to be taking part (Marshalls Park and Sanders) had pulled out the day before. Perhaps they were too scared to compete against us? Whatever their reasons, it meant that it was now Bower Park versus four other teams made up of a mix of KS3 students from RCS-the pressure was on!
The rules were simple: Two separate competitions-one individual, one team. The individual round saw students answer 50 subject specific questions in 10 minutes. At the end of this, the successful victor came from RCS’s Year 8 girls’ team. Then came the team challenge…
Five rounds, on the clock, working together; the challenge began! Pupils had to work through different logic-based rounds including: Anagrams, Dingbats, Numbers and Letters, Characters and Novels and a general English knowledge section. At the halfway point, it was clear that Bower students were steaming ahead.
At the final count, Bower Park was 13 points clear of its nearest opponent. Victory was ours! 1st place was even more rewarding, as our young talent managed to outdo peers from higher year groups.
Well done Team Bower!
