Believe in yourself. Be yourself. Be proud of your success.
Year 9 at Bower Park Academy is an important yet exciting year for our students. It is about strengthening foundations and improving upon their results from the year before. This year brings the opportunity for pupils to start thinking about their subjects for GCSE. Throughout the year, all our students will have the opportunity to attend careers workshops, interviews and focused sessions to support them through the process. We believe the option process is a pivotal moment for our students, and because of this we include not only the students themselves, but also parents, carers and members of the Senior Leadership Team in the decision making process. We understand that you, as parents, may have questions regarding the options process and the academic progress of your children. Please do not hesitate to contact your child’s form tutor, Mrs West or me if you wish to speak to us.
After our school day ends, all year 9 students are expected to involve themselves in ‘outside the classroom’ learning opportunities. There are many opportunities for students to continue their learning outside the classroom, both at school and at home. From sports clubs to drama clubs, Bower Park Academy offers a diverse and varied extracurricular timetable for Year 9 students. Extracurricular activities are key to developing skills such as commitment, timekeeping, socialising, working in a team and dedication. Homework will be set on a regular basis for all subjects, and is expected to be completed by students in a well-presented manner. We are always able to support students who need assistance with homework, and our Learning Resource Centre offers a quiet study space, should students need it at school, as well as our homework club, which runs every day after school. During this time students have access to computers and support staff for help. We would also hope that our students have a quiet environment in order to study and complete their homework at home, so that all work is completed to the best of their abilities. Homework must be written in their homework diary, which we ask parents to check and sign weekly. Homework will also be uploaded to ‘Show My Homework’. We wish to continue to build a strong relationship between home and school as this a proven formula in helping students to achieve their best.
We expect our students to be well-equipped for every lesson by having their learning journal, relevant books, PE kit and pens and pencils with them. This is monitored daily by Year 9 Form Tutors.
Every student in Year 9 is important to us. We encourage our students to be individuals and to take responsibility for their own choices as well as teaching them tolerance and respect towards others. Certificates and prizes will be awarded throughout the year for outstanding work and commitment to learning.
We hope that our Year 9 students will find this year enriching and inspiring, and that it will help them to develop into successful and motivated young adults.
I look forward to working alongside you in order to support and ensure the achievement of your children.
